“The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization.”

Professor Sadowski’s project, Score-Based Diffusion Models for Probabilistic Forecasting of Weather and Climate, will develop machine learning methods for estimating the risk of adverse weather and climate events. The machine learning methods developed will complement existing physics-based numerical weather prediction models by providing location-specific forecasts with increased computational speed, spatiotemporal resolution, and probabilistic prediction accuracy. The research will be paired with an educational outreach program that includes a summer data science course for high school students and a workshop to share data science teaching materials with local K-12 teachers.
