Chair, Information and Computer Sciences

Welcome to the Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) Department at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa. I am pleased to serve as Department Chair alongside such a diverse, dedicated, and productive faculty.

Our department offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Computer Science at the undergraduate level. In addition to the general undergraduate degrees, we also offer two special interest B.S. tracks, one in Data Science and the other in Security. At the graduate level, we offer an M.S. degree and have just started a 4+1 program allowing students who complete certain undergraduate courses to obtain the M.S. within one year after graduation.  We offer the Ph.D. degree as the only R1 Doctoral-granting Computer Science program in the state of Hawaii. Within the ICS Department, the Library and Information Science (LIS) Program also offers the MLISc degree.

In terms of research, according to, which ranks approximately 116 U.S. universities based primarily on publication, our strengths are in the areas of Logic & Verification, High-Performance Computing, Human-Computer Interaction, Visualization, and Computer Architecture. We boast the highest resolution immersive cave environment in the world as part of the Laboratory for Advanced Visualization and Applications (LAVA).

It is everyone’s hope that our campus will return to near normal in Fall 2021. We are working now to plan the upcoming academic year and slowly build back an on-campus community.
