About

Our Mission

The Aloha Intelligence Initiative (Aii) advances ethical, responsible, and interdisciplinary AI for the people of Hawaiʻi. We integrate research, education, and community partnerships to build AI that is safe, transparent, and locally grounded. This work is led by faculty in the Department of Information and Computer Sciences at UH Mānoa, who contribute their expertise and innovation to ensure AI serves the people of Hawaiʻi with impact. Aii also embraces the full breadth of AI research, recognizing that every advance in the field — from algorithms and systems to applications — has the potential to shape and benefit Hawaiʻi’s communities.

What makes Aii unique

  • Place-based AI, shaped by Hawaiʻi’s needs and strengths
  • Responsible AI practices from classroom to deployment
  • Cross-disciplinary collaborations (ICS, creative media, natural resources, health, education, and more)

How we work

  • Co-design with communities and partners
  • Open, reproducible research and shared tooling
  • Hands-on learning through capstones and internships
