The VLDB Scholarship at the University of Hawai`i

The Very Large Data Base Endowment Inc. (VLDB Endowment) is a non-profit organization incorporated in the United States for the sole purpose of promoting and exchanging scholarly work in databases and related fields throughout the world.

The VLDB scholarship at the University of Hawai`i (UH) is a scholarship to encourage undergraduate computer science majors at UH-Manoa, UH-Hilo & UH-West Oahu to specialize in the data management field. The scholarship will help support a student during his/her last year as a Computer Science major (he/she will graduate the year following announcement of the award).

The applicant

  • Must NOT have been awarded the VLDB scholarship before.
  • Must have been a full-time student within the UH System for at least twelve months prior to being considered for the scholarship.
  • Must have been declared a Computer Science major for at least twelve months prior to being considered for the scholarship.
  • Must have completed sufficient courses so that he/she is within two semesters of graduation with a Computer Science degree.
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.5.
  • Must be a full-time student in the year following the award of the scholarship.
  • Must commit to completing the following data management related courses by graduation:
    • UH-Manoa: ICS 421 Database Systems II
    • UH-Hilo: CS421 Database Systems II and CS422 Data Mining
    • UH-West Oahu: TBD

Selection will be merit-based and up to three awards (one per campus) will be made each academic year. Each award will consist of $2000 cash.

UH-Manoa: Eligible students should email a copy of their current transcripts to Dr. Lipyeow Lim (lipyeow at hawaii.edu). Please include “VLDB Scholarship Application” in the title of your email.
