ICS2004-05-01: ALU: An artifact-centered asynchronous online discussion facility - B. Harris

It is often the case with online discussions that the artifact upon which a discussion is based is not easily accessible through the discussion; or that references are made to multiple artifacts during the discussion and are therefore difficult to organize. Alu has attempted to address these issues by combining a discussion and artifact in the same browser window, allowing the user of the system to easily consult the appropriate artifact while reading message postings. This allows the messages to be kept in context as well as making reference to the artifact simpler. Additional features such as uploading files, email subscriptions and various layouts have been added over time to enhance its overall functionality.
