"Computational geometry algorithms for navigation planning and asset monitoring in medical applications"
Dr. Marina L. Gavrilova
University of Calgary
Abstract:
A problem of optimal asset location in a hospital setting and its impact on clinical processes related to everyday operation of a medical ward are some of the notorious challenges faced broadly by the healthcare industry. Inability to locate the needed asset in time can lead to serious health implications for patients receiving care, waste valuable provider's time and possibly delay care for other patients due to disruption in provider’s workflow. While some studies are currently undertaken to track assets in clinical settings through the use of recently emerged location tracking technology (RTLS), very few up to date have looked into the problem of asset location optimization from the computational geometry point of view.
This presentation will consist of two parts: the first one will provide some overview and specific examples in the area of computational geometry algorithms for optimal path planning on example of a GIS navigation problem. The second will discuss the new approach the complex asset and workflow optimization problem in a hospital setting through the utilization of formal mathematical models.
