Seminar: Blended instruction in large-enrollment introductory courses--complementing face-to-face instruction with educational technologies (9/25/2008)
POST 126, Thursday, September 25th, 4:30-5:30pm
Approximately 35% of university students are enrolled in large-enrollment introductory courses. With this in mind, there is a need to improve large-enrollment introductory courses, as they serve as a basis for subsequent coursework. In this talk, we discuss instructional strategies for large-enrollment classes in higher education. Strategies that will be discussed include lab and lecture meetings, managing large-enrollment classes with TA teams, and the integration of instructional technology to increase interactivity for students. We discuss the technologies we integrated into ICS 101 (including Podcasting, simulations, course management systems, synchronous on-line assistance, etc.) and their pedagogical advantages.
Dr. Michael-Brian ("MB") Ogawa is an Assistant Faculty Specialist in the Department of ICS, where he manages a team of teaching assistants, develops curriculum, and works with technology integration strategies for ICS 101. His PhD dissertation was Exemplary Undergraduate Teaching Assistant Instructional Practices as Framed by the ARCS Model of Motivation.
David Nickles is full time Instructor in the Department of ICS, where he has been teaching ICS 101 and other courses for 7 years. He has developed innovative uses of technologies for distance and blended learning, including course management systems, podcasting, and simulation environments. David has engaged students from around the Pacific Rim and across the world in his online courses.
