Rich Gazan, Kim Binsted, and the LILT Lab
The Manoa Experience is this Saturday, Nov 15, from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM. For this event the ICS department will present the following:
Creative Information Delivery, Rich Gazan
POST 318B from 10:00 AM to 10:15 AM
Description: With a tidal wave of information overwhelming nearly every field, information professionals are creating new careers by delivering organized, relevant and trustworthy information in a wide range of organizations, and to a wide range of people. This talk will focus on what it takes to become an information professional in today's world, and how creative information delivery is becoming more and more essential.
To Infinity, and Beyond!, Kim Binsted
POST 318B from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM
Description: Humanity is moving into a new age of space exploration. Space tourism has become a reality, and ambitious plans for regularly scheduled suborbital flights and orbital hotels are in the works. NASA's roadmap will put humans back on the Moon by 2020, in preparation for an eventual journey to Mars. Robotic missions are exploring the solar system, and the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence is scanning the skies for a message. This talk will describe some of these exciting developments and Hawaii's role in future space exploration.
LILT LAB:
POST 309 from 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM
SocialSense: A System For Social Environment Awareness Have you ever been in a room full of people and wondered what their names were or where they worked? Have you ever been at a conference and wanted to know more information about the person you were talking to? SocialSense is an application that aims to tell you more about the people who are in your local environment, by allowing you to explore the profiles of nearby people who have agreed to participate in the system. Two versions of SocialSense have been developed: one that works using a display built into a pair of glasses with a custom ring input device, and one that runs on the iPhone platform.
Augmented Driving: Today's automobiles present drivers with many different kinds of information. Everything from GPS aided maps, speed, and even music selection can be viewed on dashboards or center consoles. The Augmented Driving project involves displaying information embedded into the windows and mirrors of the car. Augmented real world objects provide drivers with useful information that is displayed in a more natural line of sight. The system presents real time data about driving conditions, helping to improve navigation. We have prototyped the idea in the Second Life virtual world and initial results are promising.
Virtual Roommates Physical reality, virtual reality, augmented reality, ... what's next? Perhaps, a Multiverse Reality, where delegates of all kinds coexist and interact with each other in a loosely linked continuum of spaces. We introduce virtual roommates(), a concept that allows users to overlay multiple physical and virtual scenes and populate them with physical and virtual characters. As the name implies, roommates() provides continuous ambient presence for multiple disparate groups, similar to people sharing living conditions, but without the boundaries of real space.
Come on by to see whats happening!
