Sample Workload Email

Here is a sample workload report request:

Greetings, all,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it is now January and time for all of us to fill out our yearly faculty workload report for January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2015.

For details on how to do this, please see the following:

http://goo.gl/IGRrr

The good news is that this should take no more than about 30 minutes of your time:15 minutes to re-read the above document
15 minutes to actually create your workload report

Note that if you were on sabbatical for all of 2014, then you do not have to fill out the report. If you were on sabbatical for part of the year, then you only need to report on the portion of the year you were on duty.

Links to workload reports for prior years are available at the bottom of this page:

Please send me a PDF with your information, formatted at least somewhat similarly to the example in the above document. You can use your favorite technology: Word, Excel, LaTeX, Emacs, AutoCad, Visual Studio, PhotoShop, Mathematica, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, SnapChat, etc to create your report, but please send it to me as PDF.  Please try to make it fit on one page.

As noted in the instructions, your report should list no more than 40 hours per week of workload.  I will return reports for revision if they exceed this value.  In the past, the administration provided us with a spreadsheet that allowed unlimited weekly hours of work, and it resulted in a “workload arms race” where faculty were indicating they were working 60, 80, even 90 hours a week on average.  To prevent this measurement dysfunction, the intent of this report is not for you to exhaustively record every single activity, but rather to record a subset of your activities justifying a full time workload of 40 hours a week.

I would like to have this ready for circulation by February 1, 2016.  Faculty workload is a continuing source of controversy, and I believe we have one of the more enlightened policies in place.   If we all bite the bullet and take a few minutes, once a year, to comply with our own policy, then we have more leverage to keep it in place.

Please let me know if you have any questions,

Philip
