Tuition Waivers

Each semester, our department offers a limited number of tuition waivers to students not already offered financial aid in the form of a research or teaching assistantship. There are several requirements for this form of financial aid, but the most important ones are:

  • For the TW, you must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • For the PAS, you must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5.
    • TWs are allocated by the Graduate Division - our department doesn't currently receive any PAS TWs.
  • For both TW and PAS, you must enroll in at least 8 credits of courses related to your ICS program.

Tuition Waiver Application Process

To apply for these waivers, please follow this procedure:

  1. Obtain both a "Graduate Division Tuition Waiver Application" (TW) Form and a "Graduate Division Pacific Asian Scholarship" (PAS) form and fill them out. They are available from the ICS Department office. Please turn them in there to be filed in your folder. These forms must be filled out and turned in before sending the email message in the following step. You must fill out a new application each semester, even if you are currently receiving a TW or PAS.

  2. Once you have filled out these two forms and turned them in to the ICS main office, you must then send an email message to the ICS Graduate Chair (ics-gradchair@hawaii.edu) in the following format:
    • The Subject: field must be Tuition Waiver/PAS Application.
    • The body of the email message must contain the following questions and your responses:
      1. An indication that you have turned in your TW application to the ICS main office in POST 318.
      2. Please provide your name, mailing address, Student ID, telephone number, and UHUNIX email account.
      3. Please provide the semester and year you entered (or are entering) the ICS program, the semester and year you plan to graduate, and all ICS courses you have enrolled in thus far and your grades in them.
      4. Your cumulative GPA.
      5. The courses and total credit hours you plan to enroll in for next semester.
      6. All ICS graduate students are required to complete a project or thesis in order to graduate. Our goal for the tuition waiver is to help students initiate, work on, or complete their project or thesis. Please provide a description of the project or thesis you are working on (or plan to work on), and what you hope to accomplish during the upcoming semester while supported by a tuition waiver. URLs to project/thesis documents are welcomed.

5. Description of thesis/project:

For my project, I am interested in user interface specifications in XML and generating Java applications and applets according to such specifications. I plan to develop business application software for the hotel industry, and believe that generating user interfaces for bookings and reservations using XML can greatly reduce the costs of software development. This tuition waiver will help support the design phase of this project. By the end of the semester, I hope to have written the user manual and technical reference document for the resulting system. Further information on this project can be obtained at my web page at:
